The Last Judgment

Tempera, gold ground on panel
Accademia Gallery, Venice

This is part of a larger panel that includes the Passion. It uses some, but not all, of the traditional medieval iconography: in the upper register, Christ is enthroned in a mandorla, flanked by saints and angels; in the lower, angels trumpet the end and the righteous rise from the earth on the left. On the right is an undifferentiated hillside where we would usually see the unrighteous consigned to Hell. Between the two sides an angel holds a scroll with an inscription that is now faded away.
